Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth. This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy. And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
Oh boy. I’ve got to watch out for this. To be honest, I’ve caught a glimpse or two of selfishness peek out at me since I started looking at this. I’ve considered this before, but after hearing that people with selfish ambition wouldn’t know it even if it jumped up and bit them, I began to take it serious.
I also know that a few selfish thoughts here and there do not mean you do not have pure motives. I believe that temptation will arise but you do not have to act on it. I have tried to be pure in this journey, but I also know I have had those moments. I just need to be careful.
And not only careful, I need to actively pursue the wisdom of God in this. James has given a way to have the wisdom of God. “First pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.”
I need to pursue this list diligently.
